If you ever feel like truly burning money there are not very many better ways to do it than at 2,700+ FPS out of the end of a barrel and getting a big whiff of burnt powder straight into your nose on a Saturday. “Ahh yep, smells like $15 per mag”. Depending on what you’re shooting these days, $15 per mag could actually be a smokin’ deal, pun intended. Sadly, the days of $200 Mosins and a case of ammo with it are gone, and instead we’re left with record high 9mm, 7.62×39, and 5.56 prices, and let’s not even get started on the other popular calibers out there. Naturally, yes, ammo prices fluctuate just like everything else but if we take a closer look it’s not hard to see that as a net average ammo prices are climbing higher and higher over time. That fact alone makes it important to know how to buy bulk ammo, when to buy it, and what to look for when purchasing ammo in bulk these days!

What is “Bulk Ammo”?

The word ‘bulk’ gets thrown around a lot in reference to ammunition, so what qualifies as ‘bulk’ and why should you buy your ammo that way?

Well, it kind of depends who you ask. You see, for the average shooter, bulk means a case or more of ammo. Case quantities are whatever size the manufacturer packages their boxes of ammo in when they send it to a store or retailer. So for example, a “case” of Blazer 9mm FMJ, is going to be 1,000 rounds of ammunition packaged in 20 boxes of 50 rounds a piece. 50 rounds per box, 20 boxes per cardboard case, 1,000 rounds in the case. On the other hand, hunting ammunition like Soft Point 30-06, or Polymer Tip .308, are more commonly found in 200 round cases, 10 boxes of 20 rounds. Why’s it important? To save you money. Many online retailers have a dollar amount minimum in order for your ammunition to ship for free, that means that if you only buy a few boxes worth, by the time you factor in taxes and shipping, you could have doubled the cost of your ammo. However, (and we will use ourselves as an example here) at Wild Horse Ammo, if you order a “case” or more of ammo, your order ships free. Not to mention, the price per round is always a little cheaper when you buy a case of ammo than when you buy a few boxes. That means you can stock up and make each trigger pull hurt your wallet a little less. The benefits do not stop there though, when you order in bulk, and get free shipping with an order, this opens the doors for you, if you already qualify for free shipping; you can now add those 1 or 2 boxes of whatever it is that caught your eye that you really want to try out but don’t want to buy in bulk or pay for shipping on.

What Ammo Should I Buy in Bulk?

Generally, you’ll want to buy whatever ammo you run through the most in bulk. Here at Wild Horse, our customers are usually running through Bulk 9mm FMJ, Bulk 308 FMJ, Bulk 5.56 FMJ, and Bulk 7.62×39. This is to be expected for most guys, you’ll likely run through your popular ball ammunition favorites a heck of a lot faster than you would run through your Hunting Ammo that you would take with you into the whitetail woods. Still, whether you’re plinking with ball ammunition or stocking up for many deer seasons to come, a good deal is a good deal when you find one! So yes, while ball/FMJ ammo is the most popular and most affordable ammo to buy in bulk, sometimes when a good deal can be had on a case of defensive ammo or hunting ammunition that plan on using for the foreseeable future, it might not be a bad call idea to go ahead and snag it.

Where to buy Bulk Ammo?

Once again, it is easy for us to say, buy it from us! However, for those looking for some guidance that’s a little less biased, here’s some things to look out for!

First and foremost, reputation. You’d be smart to not exclusively look at the price point but to also look out for reviews on the companies you plan on shopping with. Customer service and knowing you’ll be taken care of should anything go wrong is worth a lot in itself and works as a safety blanket for you while you shop! Now the obvious one, pricing. It’s always worth taking a look at Ammo Seek to get a good idea of what the specific ammunition you’re looking for is commonly being sold for price wise. Prices fluctuate all the time, and keeping an eye on your everyday price and what the ammo you want to buy is commonly sold for is a good way to gauge how good of a deal you’re getting. The best way to utilize Ammo Seek is to set your filters, we always recommend selecting the “F” for “Free Shipping” and the “New” for “Condition”. These settings will filter out any remanufactured ammunition or any vendors that will charge shipping for something that would otherwise ship free with someone else, ensuring you get the best deal you can.
